Coving: How easy is it to do and what are the pitfalls?
We want to put up coving and have seen in Homebase a “Coving Kit” that has straight edges, corner pieces and such and I was wondering how easy is it for someone with no experience. There are also pitfalls and I would be grateful to know what they might be. I have two pipes running down the wall that got through the celing so these will need to be factored in.

Coving is reasonably easy to put up. Polystyrene coving will not paint well. Normal paper encased or ornate plaster coving is the usual stuff.
It is a two person two step ladder job as one will have to hold each end. Usually in a pack there will be a paper template that you place on your coving to mark it correctly with a pencil before cutting/mitring. Without this paper template it is a pain. You still won’t get the corners perfectly cut so you have to finish the joints by overfilling and sanding down prior to painting.
There will be a proper coving adhesive which you apply to the back of the coving; however the coving needs to be held in place with a couple of masonry nails to take the weight while the adhseive drys – don’t bang the nails all the way in as you want to pull them out afterwards.
You also want to put a pencil line on the wall all the way round where you want the bottom edge of the coving to be. The way I would do this (though I am a decorator not a plasterer) is to use an offcut of the coving and offer it up to the walls in every corner and mark where the bottom should sit. Then between the marks you have made in each corner twang a chalk line (and pencil that in) to give you a straight line to work to regardless of the wavering of your ceiling.
A little preparation will probably make all the difference.
