When did the US stop minting a solid copper penny and what percent of zinc and copper are used now?
When did the US stop minting a solid copper penny and what percent of zinc and copper are used now? Is it worth hoarding pennies?
Currently they are 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. In 1982 they switched from 95% copper and 5% zinc (they made both that year). It is not really worth hoarding pennies, since right now the melt value is of post 1982 pennies are $0.0079256 and the pre 1982 are $0.0244212. The cost of melting and separating is too expensive (and illegal).
