How do I help my lawn? Grass is turning brown.?

I live in Illinois. We have a new lawn that was seeded last fall. Bluegrass/Fescue mix I beleive.?. It was fertilized last fall as well. I have a great stand of grass and it looked awesome last fall and early this spring, but now the grass is starting to look a little brown. It doesn’t appear that the whole lawn is going to die, but I want good looking lush green grass. There are also some weeds starting to show (white clover, some broadleaf type weeds etc…). I want my lawn to look really good. The lawn doesn’t recieve much shade, but it hasn’t been all that hot yet either. What should I do? I would like to care for my lawn on my own, but I dont’ know what it needs. What does is cost to let the professionalls at it? We have a .25 (1/4) acre lot in a small town. Thanks in advance.

This may be as simple as mowing your lawn to low. It doesn’t have to be hot for the sun to bake a stem to death. Also, when it’s cut too short, it makes it difficult for the grass blade to retain water for healthy growth.

The next thought is what type of mower is being used? Could it be that it isnt mulching or have a bag to pick up excess grass? If it’s cut and too much dead grass lies on it, than you’ll have spots that will start to die and look bad.

Try to go to those spots and SEE what is happening. Try setting your mower on one setting up to see if it helps. Make sure your water gets enough water, but not too much. About an inch of water during water is all that is needed. Don’t drown out your lawn thinking it needs more than that.

Do you have a dog, is it going in those areas or maybe a stray cat is?

There are many weed and feeds on the market today that are great, they normally require watering after beign laid down. That will kill off the weeds that are growing and help replenish the grass.

Professionals are going to vary in cost. Depends on the town, depends on the state and depends on the company.

If it were me, i’d work on it first and then see if i need help. Your local home depot or lowes ( or any place like them) will be able to give you lots of answers for your neighborhood.

Oh, can the sprinker heads be near the yellow spots? Or
where you set up a moveable sprinkler? could it just be too much water in one place?
